In June 2019, Council decided to suspend the publication of “Connections” newsletters for the foreseeable future. So after a busy fall, instead of a newsletter, we reproduce below a flyer that the Worship Committee prepared for distribution in Advent. The next substantial report of church activities will be the 2019 Annual Report, which will be published in March 2020.
A Christmas Blessing
As we approach the darkest time of the year, our hearts fill with hope and joy in anticipation of Christmas.
Because of the long nights at the winter solstice, many of us appreciate Advent with its candles and preparations, and the joyous lights on trees, family dinner tables, and communion tables at Christmas.
This Advent, our focus is on family. We will hear most of the first two chapters of Luke with their tales of the miraculous births of both John and Jesus; the mystical silence of John’s father; angelic greetings; and a joyous reunion between the cousins Mary and Elizabeth.
In a world of constant change, the touchstones of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love in Advent can open us to God’s Grace and prepare us for the rebirth of love that is Christmas. Then on Christmas Eve, the Holy Family becomes our family and the birth of Jesus becomes a celebration of the sacredness of every person.
This fall at Mill Woods United, the cries of infants and the shouts of children have blended with the soulful music of the choir and the prayerful rhythms of friends as we celebrate life’s joys and reach out in care during times of trial.
Now as another December approaches, I pray that the light of our candles, the joy in our hearts, and the deep feelings we express in carols will lead us to Bethlehem with awe, wonder, and love.

The Council of Mill Woods United Church has decided not to designate any one group or charity for our Christmas special offerings in 2019. If you are in the position to give a financial gift, we ask that you consider giving to Mill Woods United Church’s local operating fund. This is the fund that allows our congregation to support the many, many outreach projects we are involved in within our community.
Christmas gift envelopes will be available starting on Sunday December 1. Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support of the good work being done in our community.
This December, the Bissell Centre is not organizing White Gift Sundays. But as usual, our Mitten Tree will be up by December 1. The Clothing Bank appreciates your gifts of mittens, gloves, toques, and scarves.
Thank you to everyone who makes our church a sustainable and vibrant spiritual community where you can explore your purpose and place!
And, Merry Christmas!!
