November 20: Anniversary Sunday

On Sunday, November 20, 2016 Mill Woods United will celebrate 40 years as an official pastoral charge of the United Church of Canada at its 10:30 am service.

Forty years is not always seen as a key anniversary. But 40 holds a special place in the biblical tradition. After his baptism, Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness. The Season of Lent is 40 days. Noah survived a flood of 40 days and nights. Some commentators think that the number 40 keeps appearing because human gestation lasts about 40 weeks!

Mill Woods United has meant a great deal to a large number of people in its first 40 years. We hope that our anniversary service will launch us in style on our next steps along God’s path of faith, hope and love.

The “constitution” service for Mill Woods United was on November 14, 1976. November 20 is the final Sunday of the current church year, and as such is called “Reign of Christ” Sunday. For these reasons, November 20 seems like a great date on which to have a celebration.

Former ministers and members from Mill Woods United (including from the years when it was split into two congregations — First Mill Woods and Southwoods — between 1984 and 1999) will be here to help us remember, give thanks, and look forward. Our Zimbabwean friends from the United Methodist congregation will join us and offer some music. Our new Music Director Bryan LeGrow is already thinking of an anthem for the choir. Heavenly Hospitality is preparing a lunch. It should be a wonderful moment.

If you know of a former member who would like to attend, let the church office know along with an email or home address if you have it. And please help to spread the word: we hope to pack the sanctuary!
